The Silent Patient Book Cover Design
Original:
My re-design:
I do not read books very often, but I did read this recently and it was very interesting. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. My goal for this project was to design a front cover that makes the audience want to know more, directing them to read the book description on the back cover. The book is about a woman who is mourning her deceased husband, who was murdered. Sketch 1 and 3 connect to the title of the book more because I wanted to emphasize the woman's mouth is covered, although, for sketch 3 I used the torn page idea from the original cover, the proximity and continuation differ. Sketch 2 is the widowed patient just standing in the middle of a blank room with a blank expression. I was inspired by a specific scene in the book when the woman was speaking with her therapist for this graphic, I tried to use the imagery in the book and put it on paper. I feel like sketch 4 could potentially be the most eye-catching, and could be the best choice to move forward for part 2. I included more than one figure, the shaded one is supposed to represent a mystery man. Let me know what you guys think!
The gestalt principles I incorporated are proximity and symmetry. I focused on these principles mainly for the title, author's name, publisher's logo, and scanner. I tried to design the book cover and the spine differently for each concept idea. I used the proximity between the publisher's logo and the scanner. I incorporated symmetry in the title and author's name, this was important to me because I feel as though small things such as word alignment creates such a different aesthetic. Small changes or details make big differences.
